Exercises to Try at Home.

Yesterday I had limited time to squeeze in a workout. There was not time to waste by going to the gym. Normally, I would have just not exercised yesterday and made up for it during the week but my schedule is limited this week and I knew that if I didn't do it yesterday, I probably wasn't going to get my 4 days of weights in. So I got a little creative and challenged myself at home.

I don't have a weight set at home. All I have is a stability ball. So, you, my friend, have no excuse. Set a goal of 45 minutes. Try to do 4 sets of 10-12 reps. If you haven't worked out recently, maybe start with 3 sets of 10. 30 second rest intervals. You'll be surprised at how quickly 45 minutes goes by. But likely you'll be even more surprised at how challenging this simple at-home routine is! (I was! It left me feeling sore in all the right places.)

Swiss Thigh
This picture uses weights but if you don't have any, modify the exercise with the stability ball. Start with the ball between your legs and your hands extended over head. As you lift your legs and the ball, simultaneously lift your arms. When your legs and arms pointed towards the ceiling, grab the ball with your arms. Then, slowly lower your legs and your arms carrying the ball towards the floor. That is one rep.

Rotational Lunge and Shoulder Press
Again, I didn't have weights so I did the movements without weights. Next time I do this, I will use weights.
Stand with your feet together and your arms at your sides. Take a giant step back with your right leg, landing with your toes turned out. Sink into a lunge until your left thigh is parallel to the floor, then lower your arms and torso until your hands are on either side of your left ankle. Straighten your left leg without locking your knee and stand up, bringing your right leg forward so your legs are together. At the same time, press your arms overhead with your palms facing each other. That's one rep.

Sumo Squat Side Knee Raise and Side Crunch
Instead of a medicine ball, I got creative and used a 5lb container. Be creative and use what you have. You'll like this exercise, it's killer. Be careful to focus on keeping your core muscles tight to support your back and hips.
Standing with your legs wider than shoulder-width apart, hold a medicine ball in front of your body. Squat until your thighs are almost parallel to the floor. Keeping your right knee bent and rotating the hip so your inner thigh faces forward, stand up on your left leg and lift your right leg out until your knee is past your hip. At the same time, circle the ball clockwise until it's above your right shoulder and crunch your upper body to the right. Return to start. That's one rep. Repeat for the other side.

Plank with Alternting Leg Lift
Get into a plank position, with your forearms on the ground, elbows directly under your shoulders, and legs extended straight behind you, feet hip-width apart. Your body should form a straight line from your shoulders to your ankles, and your core should be braced. Keeping your hips parallel to the floor, squeeze your glutes to raise your right foot a few inches into the air. Raise and lower eight times. That's one rep. Repeat with your left foot.

Double Hip Extension
Lie on your back and bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the floor. Slide your arms out to your sides at 45-degree angles, palms facing up. Tighten your core, then squeeze your glutes to lift your hips an inch off the floor. This is the starting position. Raise your hips toward the ceiling until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees. Pause, then lower to the starting position. That's one rep.

Floor I-Position Raise
Lie facedown on the floor. Extend your arms above your head and rest them on the floor, keeping them straight and in line with your shoulders, palms facing each other and thumbs pointing toward the ceiling. Your body should form a straight line from your feet to your hands. Squeeze your shoulder blades together and down to raise your arms a few inches off the floor, keeping them straight. Pause, then slowly lower back to the starting position. That's one rep.

Tricep Dips
Pull up a chair, use your hands then allow your arms to drop your body. Focus on using the back of your arms to lift you up. That's one rep.

Push Ups
You already know how to do them. They're just so much work, especially for women, that most of us neglect this beneficial exercise. But push-ups strengthen the chest, shapes the shoulders, triceps, and glutes while toning and tightening your entire core. Working all those muscles at once torches calories and can even help give your girls an extra boost. So get to it already! Oh, if you can't do a regular push-up (I admit I struggle with them too) start with a modified push-up, a.k.a. the girl push-up. :)

Remember, give yourself a time limit and try to stick to it. 45 minutes is all you need. If you don't have that long, try a half hour. You'll notice that these seemingly simple exercises really challenge you. But no pain, no gain! Have fun and enjoy!

My latest favorite recipe.

Barley is a fairly new grain to me. I had it in soup about a year ago and I liked it so much that I tried to replicate the soup but I was left with a bunch of extra barley. That same barley sat around for a while until I sought out some alternative uses for it. Of course, it works great in soup. Or use it to replace rice. But in this recipe, it is the base of the most delicious salad ever! Serve it on a bed of lettuce with a side of grilled chicken and you have a very complete, healthy meal. Enjoy!

Ingredients

1 cup barley
2 1/2 cups water
7 sun-dried tomatoes
2 cloves garlic
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
1/2 cup finely chopped basil
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

Directions

Bring barley and water to a boil in a saucepan over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the barley is tender, but still slightly firm in the center, about 30 minutes. Drain and cool to room temperature in a bowl.
Puree the sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, 2 tablespoons olive oil, and balsamic vinegar in a blender until smooth. Pour over the barley. Fold in the basil, and feta. Cover, and refrigerate until cold. Stir before serving.

Makes 6 servings.

Here's what Jonny Bowden says about barley: "It's a type of whole grain that originated in Southeast Asia and Ethiopia and has been cultivated for more than 10,000 years. It's high in dietary fiber, but specifically in a beneficial type of soluble fiber called beta-glucan. Two studies have shown that beta-glucan can help control the appetite by increasing the feeling of fullness, and beta-glucan has also been shown to help lower cholesterol(about 12 percent reduction in one 2000 study)."

Food...and Italian. What could be better?

Two weeks and going strong!  Okay, I admit... there's been some challenges.  Like lifting weights three days in a row.  Was I ever sore...  lol

Another challenge that I've noticed is nutrition.  In a way I'm at an advantage because I like eating healthy foods.  Spinach, kale, corn, broccoli, carrots, fruit, lean meats and whole grains.  I should stop now because just the thought is making me hungry. :)  But despite my taste for healthful foods I didn't realize that they were out of balance.

I'm part Italian.  And us Italians, we love our grains.  And as an American I love to indulge.  Who doesn't love freshly baked bread or good quality pasta?  Only recently am I accepting the fact that I overeat grains.  For a while I was making at least two of my daily meals vegetarian.  As any good vegetarian knows, if you don't want to waste away you have to find vegetable sources of protein.  Well, I wasn't doing that.  I had basically eliminated protein from two of my meals and called it vegetarian.  Not good.

So lately I've been focusing on re-incorporating protein into my diet and eating it with every meal.  Not just any protein though but lean protein sources.  (i.e. skinless chicken, beans (an excellent source of both protein and fiber), greek yogurt (who knew?) and eggs)

I picked up a book at my trainer's suggestion called "The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth" by Jonny Bowden.  Basically, he describes 150 different foods and tells you exactly why they are nutritious and what they do for you when you eat them.  [I'm probably going to do several posts regarding this book just because there is so much good info in it.]

Somehow in his 360 page book, the grain section only has 7 pages.  He even goes so far as to state "If you ate a great balance of foods from the 150 that make up the list of the healthiest foods on the planet, and you never touched a grain for the rest of your life, you wouldn't be missing anything nutritionally."

Our bodies need protein.  We don't need carbs.  Okay, hold on.  I'm not advocating the Atkins diet!  I'm a firm believer in balance being the key to life.  I'm only saying that we need to evaluate our nutritional needs.  And in my case, I'm stressing protein because an area of nutrition that I can improve on.

In order to really develop lean muscle [aka: my goal] you have to feed your body the nutrients it requires to build the muscles.  Basically, that would be protein and amino acids.  A most excellent source of that is whey protein.  I've never been a fan of supplements but at my trainer's suggestion I started taking a whey protein supplement.  This is what I'm using:

I bought it at Fred Meyer's in the Natural Section.  There are many brands to choose from.  I picked this one because it was 100% natural whey and it had a good calorie/protein ratio. The first time I nearly gagged on it.  lol  Now I look forward to drinking it.  It tastes like chocolate milk.  Plus, I know I'm getting 18g of extremely high quality protein per serving and tons of the building blocks to amino acids.

And then there is weight loss.  One scoop of whey protein and I feel full for a couple hours.  And that says a lot, especially after a tough workout.  Normally, I would be ravenous leaving the gym but now I can control that.

There's an Italian expression "Chi vuol viver sano e lesto beve scotta e cena presto" meaning "If you want to live a healthy and active life, drink whey and dine early."  And this I am learning, is the secret to success.

If you're wondering why you haven't seen me in Zumba...

It's true!  I've been neglecting my favorite form of exercise-Zumba!  If only it didn't have to be this way...

I was at a standstill with my fitness so I made an appointment with a personal trainer.  After 9 months of going to the gym, I figured the Personal Trainer wasn't going to tell me anything new and was I ever wrong.  lol  She started by convincing me to replace my one and only breakfast food- cereal.  My husband is still in shock, heck I'm still in shock, because I gladly ate cereal every morning but that has changed too.

Perhaps the most difficult change has been giving up Zumba.  Not only is it a great form of exercise but it has also been a fulfilling social activity.  I'm pretty sure my number of facebook friends confirms that.  In the last few months I've met a lot of great women and had fun doing it.  Unfortunately, my new workout schedule makes it difficult to go.

Before August 1st my typical week consisted of two to three one hour Zumba classes, a one hour intense weight/cardio class and a one hour boot camp class.  So about 4-5 days at the gym each week.  I'm still there that many days of the week but my cardio and boot camp classes have been replaced with weight lifting.  Wow!  Weight lifting.  Like pumping iron in the area of the gym where mostly men congregate.  And by men, I mean mounds of sweaty meat heads grunting from the 500lbs they are bench pressing. Yikes!  Talk about intimidating...

Well, after a week of trying it out I'm finding that it's not so bad.  There are so many different machines that it's easy to vary the exercises so I don't get bored.  Plus, I feel stronger.  And I'm not the only woman.  In fact, the women I do see in that area really inspire me.  They have great muscle tone and healthy physiques which is what I'm working towards.

So, after my first week I find myself seriously longing for some social interaction.  I'm still sticking to 4 days a week of weights but I'm gonna sneak in a Zumba class too.  Just don't tell my personal trainer.  ;)
